About The Program
Part 1
Individual Therapy
SPEAK OUT!® is a speech therapy program developed by Parkinson Voice Project and brought to Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Parkinson’s Alliance. It stresses the importance of projecting one’s voice and “speaking with intent” to improve overall communication. SPEAK OUT!® includes individual speech therapy sessions provided over 4 weeks by a speech-language pathologist. Patients learn to “speak with intent” and “speak louder” while completing exercises that strengthen the entire speech and swallowing mechanisms and address cognitive challenges experienced by many with Parkinson’s.
Part 2
Group Therapy
Upon completion of SPEAK OUT!®, each patient enters the maintenance phase of this comprehensive program and joins a Voice Exercise Group. Parkinson’s is a progressive condition, maintaining one’s speech and swallowing abilities is an ongoing challenge. The Voice Exercise Group provides support, encouragement, and continued care from a licensed Speech Therapist. Patients who participate have been shown to maintain their improved speaking abilities for several years!
